Low Impact Development (LID)

The focus of this project is to find a solution to large amounts of storm water runoff.  As a team, we are designing for an area adjacent to the Michigan Tech Student Development Complex, specifically Parking Lots 21 and 26.

We are designing a bioswale for the area.  A bioswale is a subtle trench in the ground that collects storm water and allows it to infiltrate into groundwater.  It is a trough with sloped sides; and then covered with vegetation which is more aesthetically pleasing in the landscape.

Watershed Assessment Project in conjuction with Hancock Highschool

The objectives of the watershed project are to coordinate and communicate with Hancock High school’s P.E.A.K enterprise students to assess the anthropogenic affects near the Swedetown watershed. Using a gaging station, the watershed project will work with the P.E.A.K. students to establish a long-term measurement data system. Measurements of pressure, temperature, and flow rate will be recorded using a sensor placed in the water.
